Sitting quietly while waiting for a routine oil change, sipping a cup of water, few might suspect the 78 year old West Vancouver resident to hold a picture in her pocket of herself posing with Olympic track and field gold medallist Ussain Bolt. What makes this particular photo of Bolt and Christa Bortignon so interesting is that both her and bolt are both receiving track and field awards.
You might think Christa was receiving an honorary award for lifetime achievement, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Inspired by a 95 year old athlete, Christa, who was 72 at the time, decided she would take up track and field sports to stay active. “If this lady could do it, so could I!”, says the enthusiastic Bortignon, now 78 years old.
As a retired tennis pro, Christa adjusted her physical activity in her early 70s because of arthritis in her shoulders. “My shoulders were no excuse to give up activity”. Christa hopes that her World travelling and healthy lifestyle help to inspired other seniors to stay physically and mentally active. “I look forward to turning 80, because then I can set more world records”.
North Shore Kia is a proud sponsor of local athletes, including Christa Bortignon.
